Jay Neugeboren: Writing About Places I've Never Seen

My novel, The Other Side of the World, published this winter, contains a 100-page novel-within-the-novel set entirely in Singapore and Borneo. I've never been to Singapore and/or Borneo, or to any other place in Asia, and when people ask me about the book, and discover this is so, they seem bewildered. As in: How can you write about a place you've never seen or been to?

To this point no one, including friends and reviewers who have been to Singapore and Borneo, has questioned the credibility of the Singapore and Borneo I've conjured up. But why should people believe that a fiction writer has to go to a place in order to write about it? An earlier novel of mine, The Stolen Jew, begins in Israel, on a beach in Herzlia, and I wrote this novel before I'd ever been to Israel. The Stolen Jew also contains several sections set in the Soviet Union, both in time-present (about smuggling out a Jewish dissident), and in the 19th century (about a Jewish boy kidnapped to take the place of another Jewish boy for 25 year service in the Tsar's army -- the dread cantonist gzeyra).

I have never been to the Soviet Union. The list of writers who have written about places they've never been to is long, beginning with Shakespeare (his many plays set in Italy: Othello, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Romeo and Juliet, The Merchant of Venice, etc.), and includes Saul Bellow (Henderson the Rain King, set in Africa, which Bellow had never visited), Franz Kafka (Amerika, set on our shores, which Kafka never saw), Italo Calvino (Invisible Cities, an imaginary dialogue set in China between Kublai Kahn and Marco Polo). And Shakespeare, I note, never met a Jew, for they were banished from England during his lifetime, yet he created Shylock.

The novelist William Saroyan once did a travel piece for Esquire magazine about Mexico City. After the article appeared, his editor at Esquire called to tell him that several readers had written to the magazine saying they could not find some of the places Saroyan mentioned in the article. Had Saroyan visited them? "You asked me to write about Mexico City," Saroyan replied. "You didn't say I had to go there." And of course there are the thousands of historical novels -- novels that try to portray historical periods and figures by fictionalizing them -- as opposed to what writers like Bellow, Calvino, Shakespeare, Charyn, Chabon, and others have done, which is to re-imagine historical figures and events in various places and periods.

But why, in novels and stories, should writing about a place you've never been to be any different than writing about imaginary people you've never known? Or about historical figures you've never met (e.g., E. L. Doctorow's Ragtime, Colm Toibin's The Master, Mark Twain's Joan of Arc)?

The great joy for me as a writer of fiction is to be able to go anywhere in time and place, and to be anyone. In my next novel, The American Sun & Wind Moving Picture Company coming out in March of this year, I'll start out as a 12-year-old boy in the year 1915 who, on a frozen lake in Fort Lee, New Jersey, is about to play the part of a young girl in a (silent) film his family is making. And the novel I am at work on now is told by a black man, born in Louisiana at the beginning of the 20th century, who becomes close friend and "Man Friday" to the heavyweight champion, Max Baer, who famously -- and in my novel -- strode into the ring at Yankee Stadium on August 6, 1933, proudly wearing a Star of David on his boxing trunks, and proceeded to knock out a former heavyweight champion of the world, "Hitler's Boxer," Max Schmeling. And after that, I'll probably journey to...

Key Elements in a Living Trust - Estate Planning in Naples, NY

Mar 04, 2013 ?/? By: Michael Robinson, Estate Planning Attorney ?/? Category: Trust Administration, Wills & Trusts

A living trust often forms a vital piece of many estate plans. Living trusts, also known as revocable living trusts or inter vivos trusts, provide numerous potential benefits. In order to create such a trust, you must make sure that you meet some specific elements as required under the law. You should speak to?an expert estate planning?attorney if you want to create a trust, but here are some of the important elements.

Settlors and Property

When you create a revocable living trust, you establish a relationship between key people. You, as the settlor?the person creating the trust?transfer some of your property to the trust for it to own. You will name a trustee who is in charge of managing the trust property, as well as a beneficiary who has the right to use or benefit from the trust property.

Funding the Trust

Your trust will not become effective until you fund it. Funding a trust means that you transfer property to the trust to own. Sometimes this funding process is rather simple, but other times it will be more complicated. For example, if you want the trust to own real estate you will have to retitle the property in the trust?s name.

Creating the Trust Document

The trust documents will detail the terms of the trust, as well as name the beneficiaries, the trustee, and any relevant conditions or rules you want to establish. Trust documents need to state your intentions and your choices clearly.

Queen Elizabeth in hospital with apparent stomach bug

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Queen Elizabeth went into hospital in London on Sunday with symptoms of gastroenteritis, a Buckingham Palace spokesman said on Sunday.

All the monarch's engagements for the coming week, including a trip to Italy, have been canceled or postponed as a precaution, the spokesman said.

The queen had been due to visit Italy as a guest of President Giorgio Napolitano on March 6-7.

At 86, the queen is known for her robust health. She was last hospitalized in 2003 when she had a knee operation.

The spokesman said the queen was at the King Edward VII Hospital for precautionary assessments and may remain there for a couple of days.

She was last at the hospital last year, visiting her husband Prince Philip who was treated for a bladder infection.

Queen Elizabeth, who celebrated 60 years on the throne last year, usually maintains a busy schedule of public and private engagements although in recent years she has cut down on her once hectic timetable of foreign trips.

The queen has enjoyed a period of high popularity over the past two years.

The wedding of her grandson Prince William to Kate Middleton in 2011 generated significant goodwill towards the royal family. The couple are now expecting a child amid huge media interest in Britain.

The queen's own Diamond Jubilee celebrations cemented her popularity, as did her participation in the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, when she appeared alongside the fictional spy James Bond in a video sequence that was one of the highlights of the show.

This will give you free publicity, create good will and benefit your business and the charity. Try supporting multiple charities and your visitors can pick one that part of the sale will go to.

TIP! Offer something free on your website. An excellent freebie to give to your customers is the ability to download a protected article that others may need to pay for.

Use this tip for your website marketing campaign. You want your customers to feel like they can trust you, your site and your products. You should have an accessible privacy policy visible on every page of your website. These guarantees are a great way to gain the confidence of consumers that are iffy about shopping online. Assure them that their identity is safe on your website.

Internet marketing can come in many forms but one of the most basic forms is to place ads strategically around the internet. Services such as Google AdSense are a way to do this. This is a great way to achieve a big bang for a small buck.

Always offer something free on your website. Free offers always catch people?s eye and they will often revisit your site looking for other good things, as well. A helpful example would be a tax calculator on a website about finances.

TIP! Placing user polls next to any content in your website will show your customers how the majority feels about it. If you use the results you will be able to tell what your users want to see, and allow them to be involved in the decision making process.

Online marketing can be difficult when you start, but don?t give up. Don?t give up too easily, you may be on the precipice of success. Be organized before launching your website, especially if you are selling a product or service. Launching your website will take a lot of hard work and will probably include bumps along the way. Bear in mind that the effort you put into building your online marketing presence will pay off in results.

Blog frequently to make good use of affiliate marketing. If you blog regularly, you are giving yourself another forum through which you can inform consumers. Additionally, a blog increases the size of your website, which causes your search engine visibility to increase, which gives you more visitors in this long run.

TIP! Use image searches to market online, even though this is a lesser-used method of marketing. When a browser online searches some type of keyword, you will have a better chance of being found if you actually tag your images with the proper keywords.

You will get more business if you have more payment options available. In addition to allowing credit cards for a payment option, you should also allow people to use their own bank accounts and Internet services like PayPal.

You need to be listed by Google in order to run a good Website marketing campaign. Google has hundreds of thousands of searches each day, and it pays to know the search terms that people are using to look for your products or services. Your business will skyrocket if it is indexed by Google.

TIP! The most important thing about a website is clear, solid content. There?s no better way to keep readers coming back than by providing with quality content to want to come back to.

There are several distinct markets in Website marketing. For example, search engines might decide to stop taking the title tag into consideration. When that happens, you need to be ready to switch gears, like putting an increased effort behind video marketing.

Make sure your website covers all the little things, as well as the big. Your site should have a title along with a description of your site in the corner of the page. Between internal and external searches, it?s possible for visitors to arrive at any one of your site?s pages. They should always know where they are and what they?re looking at.

If you want to succeed in internet promotion you need to know what your competition is up to. Look at your competitors? sites to get a better idea of how they are marketing their products or services. You can also investigate their traffic stats and compare them to your site.

TIP! You can also add products that go with the others and sell them in a bundle. Make sure that the terms of what you?re offering are clearly stated and easy to find.

You might find that you have to make some adjustments to your approach. Remember to continue the learning process and remain open to fresh ideas.

In this image taken from video filmed on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013 and released Saturday evening, March 2, 2013, Syrian President Bashar Assad speaks during an interview with the Sunday Times, in Damascus, Syria. Iran and Syria condemned a U.S. plan to assist rebels fighting to topple Assad on Saturday and signaled the Syrian leader intends to stay in power at least until 2014 presidential elections. Assad told the Sunday Times in the interview timed to coincide with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's first foreign trip that "the intelligence, communication and financial assistance being provided is very lethal." Kerry announced on Thursday that the Obama administration was giving an additional $60 million in assistance to Syria's political opposition and would, for the first time, provide non-lethal aid directly to the rebels. (AP) ? The chief of the Syrian National Coalition has, for the first time, visited rebel-held areas near the embattled city of Aleppo in northern Syria.

Aleppo, the nation's largest city, has been a major front in the nearly 2-year-old conflict. Government forces and rebels have been locked in a stalemate there since July.

Mouaz al-Khatib met Sunday with Syrians living in two suburbs of Aleppo that are controlled by the opposition.

A coalition statement says the goal of his trip to Manbah and Jarablus was to inspect the living conditions of residents there.

The opposition controls large swathes of land around Aleppo, and several areas within the city while the government maintains controls of others.

Improved, more terrifying BigDog robot flings cinder blocks

Everyone's favorite buzzing, prancing robot, the BigDog from Boston Dynamics, has a new trick. It now has an arm which can be used to manipulate nearby objects with great force ? for instance, in this video, tossing a cinder block a good 15 feet.

The approach Boston Dynamics is taking is to use the robot's whole body as power for its actions. So, as you can see, it actually bends down to pick up the block rather than just extending its arm further. And it tilts its whole body to one side as a counterweight to the block before it throws.

BigDog's creators point out (in their characteristically minimal YouTube description) that this is how athletes and real animals perform many tasks, and it does appear to be practical ? but it's also eerily lifelike. The improved body and lessened noise from the original have failed to make its uncanny animal-like movements any less unnerving.

The latest news on the BigDog project, which is currently funded by the Army Research Laboratory, can always be found on the Boston Dynamics YouTube page. They typically upload a video or two every few months.
