Kansas City Academy hosts first grassroots music fest - KansasCity ...

In January, the Kansas City Academy, 7933 Main St., launched the Grassroots Concert Series in its 70-person performing arts theater.

This weekend, the academy is throwing a three-day Grassroots Music Festival that will feature several Kansas City/Lawrence bands and artists performing a variety of music. The festival, the academy?s first, is one sign that the series and theater have been a success during this inaugural year, said Brandon Draper, an academy faculty member who has performed for the series.?The series has been really great,? he said. ?The artists love the space and audiences have enjoyed the small, cozy environment.? The academy has made some changes and improvements along the way, he said, including its concessions: ?We now offer wine by the glass for sale as well as baked goods, coffee and tea.?An announcement about the 2013 Grassroots Music Series is forthcoming soon, Draper said. ?It will include artists from Kansas City and New York,? he said. ?We plan to offer the option to purchase season passes. We also will attempt to stream concerts live in 2013, with subscription.?The schedule for this weekend?s festival:??7 p.m. Thursday: Organic Proof, an acoustic songwriter trio featuring Barclay Martin of the Barclay Martin Ensemble, Brandon Draper of the Quixotic Fusion band and Alaturka, and Rick Willoughby of the Quixotic band and the Barclay Martin Ensemble.??7 p.m. Friday: She?s A Keeper and the Natural State. She?s A Keeper is a five-piece band that performs organic, unvarnished and melodic folk/rock songs arranged with guitars, banjo, cello, mandolin, keyboards and percussion and polished with two- and three-part harmonies. The Natural State is a Kansas City ensemble who also give the indie-folk/rock sound a nice, appealing twist.??Saturday features two performances: At 5 p.m., the Matt Otto Trio, led by saxophonist and Kansas City native Matt Otto, will perform a jazz set. At 7 p.m., Ghosty, a splendid indie-pop/rock ensemble from Lawrence, will perform a two-hour set that will include tracks from ?Ghosty,? one of the year?s best local releases.Tickets for the shows Thursday and Friday are $15. Admission to Saturday?s performances is $20. A three-day pass is available for $30. Tickets are available at kcacademy.org; they also will be available at the door.
